Mexico's Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard posted on X that he met with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer on March 18 for the first in-person meeting about the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) review. Greer said U.S. trade talks with Canada have progressed less than those with Mexico, Bloomberg reported on the same date.
The agenda for the first round of negotiations consists of reducing dependence on imports originating outside North America, strengthening rules of origin and increasing the security of regional value chains. Ebrard said Mexico's goal was to approve the USMCA extension and eliminate U.S. tariffs on Mexican goods. Canada, Mexico and the United States have until July 1 to decide on the USMCA extension for another six years, from 2036 to 2042. If they fail to do so, the deal would enter a period of annual reviews until 2036, after which the pact would be terminated if no agreement is reached.
