An Iranian lawmaker said the parliament was considering placing transit fees on ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, Reuters reported on March 19. Enforcement would be carried out primarily through the threat of attacks.
Since the U.S. and Israel-Iran war began in late February, Iran has only allowed a few commercial ships to safely transit the Strait of Hormuz. These instances were likely negotiated with Iran on a case-by-case basis. Severely restricted traffic through the strait has significantly increased global energy prices, as prior to the Iran war, nearly 20% of the world's oil supply and 20% of the world's liquefied natural gas supply transited the strait each year.
