Ugandan opposition leader Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, known as Bobi Wine, said he had fled Uganda after spending about two months in hiding following the disputed January 2026 general election, BBC reported on March 16. In a video message posted online, Wine said he had left the country for unspecified “critical engagements” abroad because he feared for his life, but vowed to return and continue pushing for democracy.
Wine, who rejected the outcome of the January election and claimed that 100 of his supporters were killed during the vote period, has been in hiding since the election, alleging that security forces vandalized his house and attacked his wife. The vote was conducted under tight restrictions, including a nationwide internet shutdown, and long-time president Museveni won a seventh term with approximately 72% of the vote.
