India's government is negotiating with Iran to ensure the safe transit of six liquefied petroleum gas tankers through the Strait of Hormuz, Bloomberg reported on March 16. This follows New Delhi's successful effort on March 13 to secure safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz for two LPG tankers carrying a combined 92,000 tons, an amount sufficient to cover roughly one day of demand for more than 1.4 billion people.
India sources nearly 90% of its LPG imports from the Middle East, meaning disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz are quickly limiting domestic supply. While India's summer typically begins in April, temperatures in recent years have started climbing as early as March, and forecasts indicate a higher likelihood of additional heatwave days across many regions through May 31.
