Anti-government protests opposing severe power outages across Cuba escalated, with protesters attacking a Communist Party office in the central city of Moron, 250 miles (402 kilometers) east of Havana, Reuters reported on March 14. Later the same day, President Miguel Diaz-Canel said the anger over outages was understandable, but that "There will be no impunity for vandalism and violence."

The current power outages are the result of extreme energy shortages, as the United States has prevented oil shipments to Cuba as part of an economic pressure campaign intended to push the government into making economic and political concessions. This campaign has strained energy supplies for electricity generation and broader daily activities such as transportation, business and school operations. Protests are rare in Cuba, but mass protests previously occurred in March 2024 over extended power outages.
