Paraguay's Chamber of Deputies on March 10 approved a Status of Forces Agreement to allow the temporary presence of U.S. military personnel inside the country, with the agreement now awaiting the approval of President Santiago Pena, AP reported on March 11. Once approved, the agreement will give the United States criminal jurisdiction over its own personnel stationed in the country and allow U.S. security forces to provide training, engage in joint exercises and offer humanitarian assistance in Paraguay.

The agreement passed with the support of 53 out of 80 lawmakers in the Chamber of Deputies, with only eight voting against it. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio called the agreement "historic." Paraguay and the United States initially reached the deal in December 2025, and Paraguay's Senate approved it earlier in March.
