Colombia's leftist ruling party and right-wing main opposition party won the most seats in the March 8 legislative elections but did not secure a majority, El Colombiano reported on the same date. In the presidential primaries, Paloma Valencia, a senator and ally of former President Alvaro Uribe, won the center-right nomination.

Fewer than half of the 41 million Colombians eligible to vote did so. Colombians elected 102 senators and 182 deputies and voted in three presidential primaries. The leftist Pacto Historico got 22.9% of the votes for the Senate while the right-wing Democratic Center obtained 15.7%. While Valencia performed strongly in the center-right primary, Uribe did not win a Senate seat, marking his first defeat in national elections since first being elected in 1986. The legislative and primary elections occurred ahead of the May 31 vote for president.
