European crude oil benchmark Brent broke through $90 per barrel on March 6 for the first time since April 2024, Bloomberg reported the same day.

Uncertainty about the United States' war goals was magnified right before Brent hit $100 per barrel as U.S. President Donald Trump said in a Truth Social post that there would be no deal unless there was an "UNCONDITIONAL SURRENDER" of Iran and that afterward there would be a "selection" of Iranian leaders. This statement appears to shift U.S. goals back to including regime change, which would likely take weeks or months to occur, if at all. Earlier that week, the White House had published a statement describing a narrower set of more militarily achievable goals.
