Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) fighters defeated Yemeni government forces and have taken control of Zinjibar, the provincial capital of Abyan in southern Yemen, a provincial official said May 27, Xinhua reported. AQAP now controls the General Security Camp headquarters, the Civil Status building and two state-owned banks — Al-Ahli and the Agricultural Cooperative Credit Bank, the official said. The AQAP militants also seized multiple privately owned businesses and have established checkpoints at Zinjibar's three entrances. Meanwhile, Yemeni fighter jets attacked Khanfar Mountain in the city of Jaar, an AQAP stronghold near Zinjibar, an eyewitness said.
