The United States released a congressionally-funded report detailing the U.S. need to maintain the Pacific Islands region as a strategic buffer between itself and China, Reuters reported Sept. 20. On the same day, Yohannes Abraham was sworn in as U.S. ambassador to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), and he is the first to hold the position since 2019.
