Afghan President Ashraf Ghani said his government had not agreed to the release of 5,000 Taliban prisoners, a precondition for inter-Afghan talks in the new U.S.-Taliban agreement, Al-Jazeera reported March 1. The Taliban has since said it would not begin negotiations until the agreed-upon prisoners were released, and warned it would resume attacks on Afghan forces following a weeklong reduction in violence.
