Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said he plans to reinforce the country's military presence in northern Cyprus (the self-declared Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus that is mainly ethnically Turkish Cypriot) in response to the United States lifting its defense trade embargo on Cyprus earlier in September, Reuters reported Sept. 28. Only Turkey officially recognizes the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, and Ankara further recognizes it as a legitimate government for all of Cyprus.
