Following five days of negotiations, Somali leaders signed an agreement to hold delayed elections within the next 60 days, France24 reported May 27. The elections will take place using a September 2020 agreement to hold indirect elections where electoral colleges would elect lower-house representatives and state assemblies upper-house members, who would then elect a president.

On May 1, Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed and his allies reversed a law that would have extended his term by two years after the decision triggered a surge of violent clashes in Mogadishu. Shortly after the reversal, Somalia’s prime minister invited the leaders of the country’s five federal member states to participate in talks to hold elections.
