A Moscow court rejected an appeal against the decision to designate opposition leader Alexei Navalny’s Anti-Corruption Foundation (the FBK) as an “extremist” group, thereby banning its activities in Russia, Meduza reported Aug. 4. In response, allies of the jailed Kremlin critic introduced a new way to accept online donations from Russia using the U.S. payments processor Stripe, through which they claimed Russian authorities could not track and punish their supporters.

Navalny’s organizations were formally deemed extremist groups on June 9. The designation bars the groups from any operations and puts their members and supporters at risk of up to six years in prison. On Feb. 2, a Moscow court incarcerated Navalny under a reinstated sentence for allegedly violating probation. He is currently serving 2 1/2 years in prison.
