Russia’s communications regulator, Roskomnadzor, said that it is slowing down the speed of Twitter in response to its alleged failure to remove banned content and threatened to completely block the U.S. social network if it does not comply, Reuters reported March 10. Roskomnadzor said that the slowdown will apply to all mobile devices and 50 percent of stationary ones, although an official later said that only images and video (and not text) will be affected.
According to Roskomnadzor, despite multiple requests, Twitter has failed to remove more than 3,000 posts containing prohibited information related to calls to commit suicide by minors, child pornography and information about drug use. Russian officials have widely blamed foreign social media firms for supposedly undermining domestic stability by serving as platforms to spread information related to the recent surge of mass demonstrations in the country.
