A group of Nigerien soldiers calling themselves the National Council for the Protection of the Homeland (CNSP) announced on July 26 that it had seized power, suspended all institutions, dissolved the National Assembly and the constitution, and closed the country's borders, BBC reported the next day. On July 27, the Nigerien military issued a communique saying it would support the CNSP, despite the fact that it initially sided with ousted President Mohamed Bazoum in a standoff on July 26.
