Moldovan President Igor Dodon said Jan. 23 he plans to cancel an agreement to establish a NATO liaison office in Moldova's capital of Chisinau, Radio Free Europe reported. The deal was signed between Moldova's prime minister and NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg back in November. Dodon's pledge to cancel the office agreement fits in with the president's attempts to reorient Moldova away from the West and toward Russia . However, he does not have the power to cancel such an agreement unilaterally; it was approved by parliament and will require a parliamentary majority to cancel it. With a pro-Western coalition still in power and parliamentary elections not scheduled until 2018, this looks it will be a year of rhetorical clashes between Dodon and the country's parliament.
