Kyrgyzstan’s prime minister and newly appointed acting president, Sadyr Japarov, has stated he intends to run for a full term in office as president if constitutional amendments allow him to do so, Reuters reported Oct. 19. After former President Sooronbay Jeenbekov announced his resignation on Oct. 15, the Kyrgyz parliament confirmed Japarov to also serve as acting president until the country’s next election, which has yet to be scheduled.
