Israel's Cabinet voted to advance a new national guard under the control of National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, sending the policy to a recommendation committee made up of existing security institutions that will provide a roadmap for the creation of the guard in 90 days, AP reported on April 2. Once the committee makes a recommendation, the Knesset will have to decide if it wants to allocate new funds to the guard and whether or not it would be under the control of existing institutions or Ben-Gvir, per the minister's demands.

It is unclear what role a national guard would play in the country's security environment, which already has multiple internal police and intelligence agencies like the border police and Shin Bet. Ben-Gvir demanded the guard in exchange for supporting the current freeze of the government's proposed judicial reforms after massive protests paralyzed the country in late March.
