Haitian and Kenyan police officers on July 17 clashed with gang members and successfully regained control of the Autorite Portuaire Nationale port, or APN, Port-au-Prince's main port, which has been under the control of gang members since March 6, Nation reported on July 19. The operation was the first time Kenyan officers — who are working under the U.N. Security Council-approved Multinational Security Support, or MSS, mission — have participated in combat against the gangs, though they have been positioned at government buildings and critical infrastructure and participated in patrols over recent weeks.
