U.N. mediator Matthew Nimetz met with Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias on Jan. 30 and held talks regarding the longstanding Macedonia name dispute between Athens and Skopje, RFE reported. On Jan. 29, Kotzias said the Greek government is working to propose a plan in February. Greece is requesting Skopje assume a new name in Slavic, "Makedonia," which cannot be translated to another language. Greece has objected to the country's use of the name Macedonia since Skopje's independence in 1991, over fears that it could lead to Macedonian claims over a Greek province of the same name.
