The ruling Georgian Dream party announced electoral reforms June 24 under which the next parliamentary elections in 2020 would be held under a proportional system, RFE/RL reported. The change comes as protests continued over the weekend in front of the country's parliament building following a crackdown on demonstrations that began June 20 over a controversial visit to the Georgian parliament by a Russian member of parliament. Separately, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said June 24 that Russia would continue to ban direct flights to Georgia for Russian citizens until the situation in the country "returns to a non-Russophobic state," Tass reported.
