The European Parliament budget committee voted Oct. 6 to end about $1 billion worth of subsidies for tobacco farmers. The committee wants the money saved from the subsidies to be used to encourage farmers to switch to other crops and to pay for anti-smoking campaigns. The proposal needs approval from the full European Parliament and the governments of EU member states.
