European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen officially stepped back from earlier plans to introduce a bloc-wide cap on the price of Russian natural gas, saying instead that negotiations with key suppliers such as Norway were a better way to prevent prices from rising further, Euractiv reported Sept. 14. Von der Leyen also announced plans to impose a windfall tax on the revenue of power companies that do not burn natural gas (such as renewables and nuclear) and a "solidarity contribution" on oil and gas companies because of extraordinary benefits.
