At least 10 Chinese vessels and five Vietnamese vessels have been trying to tail each other and cut each other off near the contested Spratly Islands in the South China Sea from May 10-14 following Vietnam's announcement earlier in May that it would expand oil drilling near the islands, the South China Morning Post reported on May 14. The vessels have kept a relatively safe distance from one another so far, and neither government has confirmed the encounters.
