China's Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp., better known as SMIC, assembled new semiconductor production lines in Shanghai that will be used to mass-produce 5-nanometer processors for smartphones using existing stocks of Dutch and U.S.-produced semiconductor manufacturing equipment, the Financial Times reported on Feb. 5. Telecommunications giant Huawei's HiSilicon affiliate designed the smartphone processors, and if their production is successful, SMIC will also begin producing 5-nanometer artificial intelligence processors for Huawei.
