The U.S. military said it mistakenly bombed allied Afghan forces in Helmand province with a drone July 21 and is launching an investigation into the incident, Washington Examiner reported. At least nine soldiers, gathered in a compound, were killed in the incident, which happened during a U.S.-supported Afghan operation airstrike in Gereshk district. In December 2015, a U.S. airstrike near Fallujah aimed at supporting Iraqi troops accidentally killed 10 Iraqi soldiers. The United States is expected to announce soon how many additional troops it will send to Afghanistan. Until the underlying factors of the war are addressed, peace will continue to elude Afghanistan.
