The Taliban have brought opium poppy cultivation levels in Afghanistan down to unprecedented levels since the group imposed its poppy ban in April 2022, according to a June 6 report published by the geographic information services company Alcis and analyst David Mansfield. Satellite images show opium poppy cultivation in Helmand province has fallen from 120,000 hectares in 2022 to less than 1,000 hectares in 2023, which alone surpasses the impact of ''any prior national poppy ban in Afghanistan.''
