Growing domestic and cross-border violence are worsening Afghanistan's multiple crises as attacks aggravate insecurity, undermine Taliban governance and complicate relations with its neighbors. International sanctions imposed on Afghanistan following the Taliban takeover in August 2021 have driven the continued decline in the economy and humanitarian conditions in the country. The Taliban's recent implementation of further restrictions on Afghan society— particularly on women and girls —has alienated some Afghans and much of the international community, and will likely complicate the delivery of the international assistance that could ease dire conditions in the country. Meanwhile, the Taliban's persistent disunity and failure to ensure discipline and uniform behavior among its fighters have sustained its inconsistent and often ineffective governance, exacerbating challenges to stabilizing the country. On May 22, the Taliban reportedly began to strictly enforce May 19 orders that female television presenters cover their faces, following attempts by some female anchors to resist.
