What We're Tracking Israel takes the next steps for tapping into a gas field disputed with Lebanon. Israel's Energy Ministry on Sept. 16 announced it would run tests to prepare to connect the Karish gas field to its national network in the coming days amid hawkish rhetoric from Hezbollah regarding the project. Threats aside, Hezbollah is not well-positioned to start a war over the field, as a domestic economic crisis continues to consume Lebanon. Hezbollah in fact will come under pressure at least tacitly to support a possible maritime deal with Israel that could see some revenue or energy sharing between the two that would alleviate Lebanon's economic crisis to some extent. Even so, Hezbollah might choose to harass the field with drones or rockets in a bid to pressure more concessions from Israel, and to bolster its appearance of resistance to Israeli gas exploration in waters claimed by Lebanon.
