What We're Tracking Further EU sanctions on Iran. When EU foreign ministers meet Jan. 23, they will discuss whether to levy new sanctions on Iran, potentially targeting Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Iran's parliament on Jan. 22 will meanwhile discuss possible retaliatory measures to the potential designation, which could include listing EU military services as terrorist entities. The European Union and various EU member states have put new sanctions on Iran in recent months, largely driven by Iranian security forces' crackdowns on anti-government protests in the country. Most recently, the European Parliament on Jan. 19 adopted a resolution calling for more sanctions on Iranian individuals and entities responsible for human rights violations and for the IRGC to be designated as a terrorist entity. The deterioration in EU-Iran diplomatic ties will make it more challenging for Iran to negotiate on a whole host of economic and security issues.
