What We're Tracking Indian farmers protests in New Delhi on Republic Day. Indian farmers will intensify protests on India's Republic Day, on Jan. 26, in New Dehli after an 11th round of talks between farmers and the government failed to produce an agreement on the implementation of controversial agricultural laws. With the protests planned for months, thousands of farmers from other states have been traveling to Delhi over the last several weeks to join in. Intensified protests increase the likelihood of disruptions to road traffic and commercial activity in the run-up to and on Republic Day. The unusually large agitation on Republic Day will put more pressure on the government to budge on its position, although it's still unlikely to completely give in to farmers' demands. Reforms in India's agricultural sector are necessary to promote the modernization necessary to ensure India's future food security.
