Editor's Note: Given that the COVID-19 pandemic has raised fears of increases in crime, we are refeaturing this On Security column that originally published in April 2013. By Scott Stewart Vice President of Analysis The March 30 shootings of Mike McLelland, the district attorney for Kaufman County, Texas, and his wife have generated a lot of press coverage, much of which has focused on potential suspects. That their deaths occurred just 11 days after the murder of Colorado Department of Corrections Director Tom Clements has led many to believe that the two incidents were somehow related or that members of the same prison gang murdered all three victims. So far, those comparisons remain unsubstantiated because the McLellands' killer has yet to be identified. What we do know is that the victims were murdered in their respective homes — an especially rare fate for law enforcement personnel.
