Summary Abdurajak Abubakar Janjalani, leader of the Philippine Moslem extremist Abu Sayyaf group, was killed on December 18 in a police raid on Basilan in the southern Philippines. Following Janjalani's death, Philippine officials were quick to proclaim the end of Abu Sayyaf and, if not peace in our time, at least a substantial reduction in violence in the southern Philippines. However, while Philippine security forces have struck a series of recent blows to Abu Sayyaf, it is far too soon to declare a victory over Moslem extremism in the Philippines. Abu Sayyaf is not yet dissolved, MNLF rebels continue to commit freelance kidnappings, MILF remains a potent force, and there have already been reports of a new extremist group in the region. No, we would not advise businessmen to lower their defenses on Mindanao any time soon.
