In an all-night voting session Dec. 20, Indonesian Vice President Jusuf Kalla was elected to the chairmanship of his party, Golkar. Kalla is expected to bring the opposition party in line with the government, making it easier for President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to enact his reform agenda. Kalla's victory is significant because it completes the schism within Golkar that has been ongoing since Indonesia's last presidential election, in which Golkar opposed Yudhoyono. With Kalla as the leader of Golkar, Yudhoyono has a much better chance of advancing his agenda, and Indonesia has a better chance of economic development and gaining regional importance. During the presidential runoff election, Kalla precipitated a split in Golkar by ignoring the directive of Golkar's then-chairman Akbar Tanjung and joining Yudhoyono's camp. As a result, Tanjung kicked Kalla and several other high-ranking Golkar Party members off of the executive committee .
