As the loudest voice among the nationalists, Trump will win acclaim from his rural support base for his decision to pull the United States out of the Paris climate accord. The move is meeting with resistance, however, from corporate America and elements of the U.S. government.
The Week That Was The Climate Showdown The battle lines are being drawn between the globalists and nationalists on the domestic and international stages. Following U.S. President Donald Trump's confrontational set of meetings in Europe early in the week, German Chancellor Angela Merkel made an uncharacteristically dramatic remark that "the times in which we" — Europe — "can fully count on others" — i.e., the United States — had ended. British Prime Minister Theresa May, meanwhile, refrained from joining in Europe's condemnation of the American president and said that the United States is free to do as it pleases. (May is of course trying to ensure that the United Kingdom has a strong relationship with the United States as it distances itself from Europe.) Merkel's reaction was a bit overblown.
