Algeria's military deployment to Niger suggests a growing willingness to launch limited interventions in its near abroad, but Algiers is likely to do so with coordination from foreign governments; however, if Algeria becomes more assertive, it would mark a shift from nonintervention and likely fuel regional rivalries with Morocco and the United Arab Emirates. The first Algerian forces were reportedly deployed to Niger less than a week after the Algerian Parliament approved the deployment during an Oct. 25-26 emergency session. According to a Reuters report citing local sources, the first Algerian convoy reached Arlit, a uranium mining town in northwestern Niger. Meanwhile, Algerian and Nigerien forces secured a 53-truck fuel shipment to Agadez in northern Niger, though a statement from the Nigerien Prime Minister's office claimed that the Algerian forces were present solely to deliver the fuel.
