A controversy over revisions to India's voter rolls will likely continue to spur protests from a wider range of groups. Meanwhile, Indian Supreme Court deliberations could result in a ruling ordering changes to voter-verification procedures, while 2027 state elections will indicate the issue's electoral impact on the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party. On Oct. 23, hundreds of protesters, including Indian farmers, joined nationwide protests against a contentious overhaul of voter rolls, expanding opposition to India's Election Commission beyond student and civil society groups. The demonstrations reflect growing coordination among farmers organizations, lawyers, activists and opposition parties around demands for electoral reforms. The demonstrations stem from growing discontent over the Special Intensive Revision, or SIR , a nationwide electoral roll review launched in 2025 that has removed more than 130 million names from voter lists, nearly a tenth of India's population.
