A steep fall in Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto's popularity amid rising economic hardship and declining foreign investment will likely prompt limited policy adjustments, but fiscal constraints will leave him vulnerable to recurring unrest and greater coalition dissent. On Oct. 20, Indonesian authorities deployed approximately 9,500 security personnel across Jakarta as President Prabowo Subianto marked his second year in office. But despite the heavy security presence, hundreds still took to the streets of Jakarta to protest his government's alleged corruption, poor handling of prolonged forest fires, and failure to address worsening economic conditions. Demonstrations were also held in other cities, including in Yogyakarta, where attendance numbered in the thousands. Some rallies continued for several days after the Oct. 20 anniversary, including in Palangkaraya, Central Kalimantan, where over 500 demonstrators assembled outside the governor's office on Oct. 23.
