Ethiopia will likely focus on consolidating control of its northern Tigray region in the coming weeks, but Eritrea's hosting of Tigrayan rebels and/or clashes along their border would raise the likelihood of a full-blown invasion of Eritrea in the coming months, which would likely indirectly draw in Egypt and threaten to merge with Sudan's civil war. On Oct. 7, residents and local officials of the city of Adigrat in the northern part of Ethiopia's Tigray region told French news agency AFP that Eritrean forces had entered the city and were progressing southward. Subsequent reporting from German outlet DW, quoting a foreign security source, indicated that Eritrea deployed between 5,000 and 8,000 troops to parts of Tigray under the control of the rebel Tigray People's Liberation Front, or TPLF, including heavy weaponry and mechanized units.
