Ukraine's recent data center strikes are unlikely to significantly reduce Russia's overall computing capacity, but targeting a relatively small number of critical facilities could still inflict lasting economic and technological damage. On Oct. 14, Ukrainian drones struck a data center belonging to Russian state-controlled banking and technology giant Sberbank in Balakovo, in the Saratov region of southern Russia, nearly 700 kilometers (435 miles) from the Ukrainian border. It marked the fourth attack on a major Russian data center in a week, following Ukrainian drone strikes against three facilities operated by another Russian technology giant, Yandex, between Oct. 8 and 11. Yandex confirmed that the strikes forced two of its facilities to shut down, and a third to partially suspend operations. The attacks disrupted several of Yandex's major revenue-generating businesses, including its taxi-hailing, e-commerce, payment and cloud computing services, while also affecting thousands of third-party companies that rely on its infrastructure.
