India is strengthening economic ties with Canada and advancing trade negotiations with Mexico to diversify its markets and supply chains amid rising U.S. trade uncertainty. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said on Sept. 22 that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to visit Canada in December, fueling media speculation that the two sides may conclude their ongoing trade negotiations, which both governments have targeted for completion by the end of 2026. Separately, India and Mexico are working toward formal trade negotiations, with Indian officials reportedly finalizing the Terms of Reference for a proposed limited preferential trade agreement, although Mexico's Economy Ministry has said that discussions remain ongoing and no final proposal has been reached. India-Canada relations have been improving under Carney after a major diplomatic spat in 2023, with both sides eyeing opportunities to broaden trade.
