The Houthis' capture of the Bab el-Mandeb Strait's eastern coast raises the likelihood of friction between Saudi Arabia and the Sudanese Armed Forces, or SAF, and threatens drone proliferation in Somalia, as a likely increase in Israel-Somaliland cooperation portends deepening ties between the Houthis and al Shabaab, which would escalate threats to regional maritime security. On Sept. 11, Yemen's Houthi movement seized the island of Perim in southeastern Yemen, which marks the entrance of the strategic Bab el-Mandeb Strait. This followed a multi-day offensive during which the Iran-backed group seized the port town of Mocha as well as the Hanish islands, which divide the southern Red Sea into two distinct channels. Amid the offensive, the anti-Houthi Yemeni National Resistance Forces announced on Sept. 7 that they found bodies of dead militants from Somalia's al Qaeda affiliate al Shabaab.
