The upcoming summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping will likely yield a trade truce extension, little progress on AI security cooperation and continuity on foreign policy and trade. Xi will visit the United States to meet with Trump on Sept. 23-25, during which Trump is expected to host a state dinner for Xi, an unusually high diplomatic protocol for a visiting Chinese leader. The two are expected to discuss trade, AI, security (including the Iran war and Taiwan), and the bilateral relationship at large. This visit is viewed by both sides as reciprocation for Xi's hosting Trump at a summit in Beijing in May. As the Nov. 10 expiration of the U.S.-China trade truce approaches, disagreements over the implementation of recent bilateral commitments are raising questions about whether Washington and Beijing can sustain their fragile detente.
