The Houthis' capture of Mocha will likely widen the Yemen war and increase pressure for deeper Saudi involvement — especially if the group consolidates control over the strategic Red Sea city and advances toward Dhubab and nearby islands, which would exacerbate regional shipping risks by strengthening Houthi and Iranian leverage over the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. On Sept. 10, Yemen's Iran-backed Houthi rebel group seized the strategic port city of Mocha on Yemen's western coast, following days of fighting with Saudi-backed government forces. Yemen's Presidential Leadership Council (PLC) Vice Chairman Tarek Saleh said that government forces, including the National Resistance, Giants Brigades and Nations' Shield Forces and other units, have suffered numerous casualties during several days of Houthi attacks, and were ordered to regroup. The decision to regroup came in consultation with the Arab coalition command and the PLC.
