To consolidate power, India's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party will seek to accelerate the long-overdue redrawing of the country's electoral districts based on updated population figures, which would fundamentally shift national legislative representation from low-fertility, wealthy southern states to high-fertility northern and central states. The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has yet to prorogue its Monsoon session in parliament, which was originally scheduled to conclude on Aug. 13. The delay has fueled speculation among opposition leaders that the ruling coalition was working to secure enough votes to pass its proposed Delimitation Bill before adjourning the session. The bill aims to redistribute seats in the lower house of India's national legislature, the Lok Sabha, for the first time in 50 years under a process called delimitation.
