Thailand and Cambodia Maintain an Uneasy Ceasefire

Thailand and Cambodia's 2025 ceasefire has survived recent landmine incidents and Thai border fortification, but stalled land and maritime disputes and forward deployments will prevent normalization and sustain the risk of accidental escalation through 2026. Military activity and security incidents have continued along the Thailand-Cambodia border since the two countries' December 2025 ceasefire . On July 29, a Thai soldier lost his left foot and suffered shrapnel wounds after stepping on an antipersonnel mine during a technical survey at Ban Nong Chan in Sa Kaeo province, becoming the 13th Thai soldier to lose a limb to a landmine since armed conflict first ensued in May 2025. The Thai army described the explosion as an accident, urged clearance teams to exercise greater caution and made no allegation that Cambodia had recently planted the device.
