What We're Tracking A likely U.S. escalation against Iran. The Iran conflict will probably escalate over the next week, following Iran's July 23 rejection of a U.S. ceasefire proposal and the deployment of additional U.S. resources in the region. U.S. President Donald Trump is reportedly set to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on July 28 in Washington, where they will likely discuss the Iran conflict. Any escalation risks widening the geographic scope and increasing the intensity of U.S. strikes, potentially expanding the target set to include civilian infrastructure. Such an escalation also risks renewed direct Israeli attacks against Iranian targets. Iran would likely retaliate proportionately against U.S. and/or Israeli strikes, risking broader attacks throughout the region, including against Gulf infrastructure. Furthermore, there is no clear path toward de-escalation.
