Israel's attack on Hamas' political leadership in Qatar will further hinder Gaza ceasefire efforts as Qatar reduces its mediator role, leaving no clear path to end the conflict in the strip, while forcing Qatar to reassess its regional diplomatic and security strategy. On Sept. 9, Israel conducted an airstrike against Hamas's political headquarters in Doha, Qatar, reportedly targeting senior Hamas officials, including Khalil Al-Hayya, who has headed Hamas's negotiations with Israel, and former Politburo head Khaled Meshaal. The senior Hamas officials were reportedly reviewing the latest U.S. ceasefire proposal amid ongoing negotiations in which Qatar, along with Egypt, has played a leading mediating role. According to media reports and statements, U.S. officials said that the U.S. military noticed that Israeli jets were flying toward the Gulf and Israel only informed the United States of the operation after it had already launched the attack.
