A brutal guerrilla war, which Robert Mugabe participated and fought in, forced Ian Smith to make concessions and eventually led to the creation of Zimbabwe where Rhodesia once stood. Smith held office from 1964 to 1979, leading the mainly white government that declared independence from the United Kingdom in 1965. The country finally gained independence in 1980.
